How do I apply?


You are doing the right thing in finding a quality program for your child! Some programs accept applications any time. Other programs have Common Application Periods. You will need documents and have to fill out paperwork. The steps below will help you with the application.

1. Choose a program that is a good fit for you and your child.

2. Get all required paperwork together.

3. Find out when to apply.

4. Take paperwork to program site and complete application process.

Child Care Centers:

All of the child care centers listed accept Child Care Assistance (CCAP). Contact a center to learn about rates, enrollment and/or application fees, hours of operation, and the ages of children served. Enrollment requirements may differ, so you should CALL a child care center to find out exactly what is needed, but all centers will require the following to apply:

Up-to-date Shot Records

Age-appropriate immunizations must be completed as required by LA State law.  The immunization record must be the STATE OF LOUISIANA UNIVERSAL CERTIFICATE OF IMMUNIZATIONS form.  The Union Parish Health Unit will assist with any needed immunizations or with transferring personal immunization records onto the required LA form.  Please check the expiration date on the immunization form to make sure your child’s record is up to date.  The Union Parish Health Unit is located at

EarlySteps:
(Applications accepted any time)

EarlySteps is NOT an all day program, but rather provides services to families with infants and toddlers from birth to 36 months of age who have developmental delays or a medical condition likely to result in a developmental delay. Anyone can make an EarlySteps referral, even the family. Children can be referred to EarlySteps by contacting the number below. Once the referral is received, the family will be contacted to begin the eligibility determination process.

Head Start:
Head Start is a program for three and four year old children. 

You will need to bring the following documents:

  • Birth certificate
  • Social security card
  • Current shot record
  • Proof of residence (Examples: Louisiana driver’s license, state-issued ID card, current utility bill, or lease or mortgage statement)
  • Proof of Income (Examples: 2 most recent consecutive check stubs, SNAP card, Medicaid verification sheet, proof of SSI benefit, or official letter from employer stating where you work, your hourly rate of pay and the average number of hours you work per week)

NSECD and Public Schools:
(Common Application period is April 4-8, 2016)

The Common Application Period for Pre-K (Pre-K Round-up) will be April 4-8, 2016. Applications will be accepted at each site during this time, and parents may attend a One Day Round-Up Event on 

What does this mean to you? You do NOT have to wait in line to apply for PreK!! Instead, go to a school with an NSECD or public program any day during the Common Application Period to complete an application. This is NOT “first come, first served.” All completed applications of eligible children taken during the Common Application Period will be considered.
